Where to Install an EV Charger in Your Garage: Placement Guide
The location of your EV charger affects installation cost, cable reach, and daily convenience. Here’s how to choose the optimal placement.
The Golden Rule: Minimize Wire Run
The single most important factor in charger placement is minimizing the distance between your electrical panel and the charger. Every additional foot of wire and conduit adds cost. Ideally, your charger should be mounted on the wall closest to your electrical panel — even if that means the charging cable has to reach across the car.
Optimal Charger Height
Most electricians mount EV chargers at 48–54 inches from the floor (roughly chest height). This puts the cable connector at a comfortable height for plugging in without bending, while keeping the unit above potential water splashing from the floor.
Outdoor vs. Indoor Installation
If you don’t have a garage, an outdoor installation is perfectly safe. Most Level 2 chargers (ChargePoint, Emporia, Wallbox, Grizzl-E) are rated NEMA 4 or IP65/IP67, meaning they’re weatherproof. Your electrician will use weatherproof conduit and an outdoor-rated junction box.
Cable Length Considerations
Standard Level 2 chargers come with 18–25 foot cables. If your car charges on the passenger side (most Teslas, Rivians) and your charger is on the driver’s side wall, make sure the cable can reach. A 25-foot cable can reach across most standard garage bays.
