IRS Form 8911: How to Claim Your EV Charger Tax Credit

Step-by-step instructions for completing IRS Form 8911 and claiming the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit on your federal tax return.

What You Need Before Filing

To complete Form 8911, you need: (1) your total eligible costs — charger hardware, labor, permit, and any required panel upgrade; (2) confirmation that your property is in an eligible census tract; (3) your regular tax liability from Form 1040 (the credit is non-refundable, meaning it can reduce your tax to zero but not below).

Line-by-Line Instructions

Line 1: Enter the total cost of your EV charger installation (hardware + labor + permit + panel upgrade if applicable).

Line 2: Multiply Line 1 by 30% (0.30).

Line 3: Enter $1,000 (the maximum residential credit).

Line 4: Enter the smaller of Line 2 or Line 3. This is your tentative credit.

Lines 5–11: Calculate your tax liability limitation. The credit cannot exceed your regular tax liability.

Line 19: Your final credit amount. Transfer this to Schedule 3 (Form 1040), Line 6.
