EV Charger Rebate: How to Get Money Back on Your Installation
Most California homeowners leave $500–$2,000 on the table by not applying for available EV charger rebates. Here’s how to claim every dollar you’re entitled to.
The Three Rebate Tiers
Tier 1 — Federal Tax Credit: IRS Form 8911, Section 30C. Up to $1,000 (30% of eligible costs). Requires eligible census tract. Claimed on your annual tax return.
Tier 2 — California Utility Rebate: $500–$1,000 depending on your utility (LADWP, SCE, PG&E, SDG&E). Applied for after installation with permit and inspection documentation.
Tier 3 — Income-Qualified Programs: If your household income is below 80% of the area median income, you may qualify for enhanced rebates (up to $1,500 from some utilities) and additional state programs through CARB and CEC.
