IRS Form 8911 Instructions: Claiming the EV Charger Tax Credit (2026 Update)

The Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit provides up to $1,000 for residential EV charger installations. Here’s exactly how to claim it and the new census tract requirements.

What is the Federal EV Charger Tax Credit?

Under Section 30C of the Internal Revenue Code, homeowners can claim a tax credit for 30% of the cost of purchasing and installing an EV charger, up to a maximum credit of $1,000. For commercial installations, the credit is 6% (or 30% if prevailing wage requirements are met), up to $100,000 per item of property.

The 2026 Census Tract Requirement

Crucial Update: As of recent IRS guidance, the 30C tax credit is now geographically restricted. To qualify, the EV charger must be installed in an eligible census tract. This generally means the property must be located in either a low-income community or a non-urban area. The IRS provides a mapping tool to verify if your specific address qualifies.

How to File Form 8911

1. Calculate your total eligible costs: This includes the cost of the charger hardware (e.g., Tesla Wall Connector), the electrician’s labor, conduit, wire, the permit fee, and even the cost of an electrical panel upgrade if it was strictly necessary to support the charger.

2. Fill out Part I and Part II of IRS Form 8911. The form will guide you to calculate 30% of your total costs, capping at $1,000.

3. Transfer the final credit amount to Schedule 3 (Form 1040), line 6.
